This is an intensive course that will serve as an introduction to the art and craft of cinema to both those who are considering a career in films and those who are passionate cinema lovers. It will enable students to engage critically with film-making as a contemporary art.

After two intense weeks, the course will come to a close with a simple ceremony chaired by the celebrated film-maker Kumar Shahani, in which students will be awarded certificates of participation.

Course Outline:

Theory: The course will include theoretical lecture sessions, screening with analytical discussions & interaction with professionals from the world of cinema.

Practice: Participants in the class will produce a short film by the end of the course.

Film screening: Daily in the evenings 6pm to 8pm.


Who will teach:

Sandeep Chatterjee, Professor of Direction and screenwriting at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, will design and conduct the course. He is a National Award winning film-maker and has 20 years of experience in teaching cinema at the highest level in the country.

Sudeep Chatterjee, Director of photography, whose recent work speaks for itself, and includes films like ‘Bajirao Mastani’, ‘Chak de India’, ‘Dhoom 3’, ‘Guzarish’, ‘Baby’ & ‘Chatushkon’. His work is both popular and critically acclaimed. His awards include: two successive National Awards, the Filmfare Award and the IIFA Award.

Kamal Swaroop, Maverick filmmaker and distinguished FTII alumnus, he has achieved cult status in contemporary Indian cinema. Swaroop has influenced a generation of filmmakers with films like “Om Dar-B-Dar”. Incidentally, he coined the phrase 'emotional atyachaar', made famous by the Anurag Kashyap film.


R.V. Ramani, FTII alumni known for his unique independent functioning as a documentary filmmaker. One of the first to explore the potential of the digital camera to explore images from life. He, too, has influenced several generations of film students with his observant eye. Ramani is currently a member of faculty at the Ambedkar University in New Delhi.

Namita Nayak Chopra is a senior sound designer in the Mumbai Film Industry. Through her illustrious career she has worked in a wide variety of film from 'A' grade bollywood starrers like '1942 A Love Story' to art-house films like 'Char Adhyay' and 'Iqbal'. In the recent past she has also developed herself as a teacher, author and a creative producer.

Amitabh Chakraborty is an ace editor and a National award winning film maker. He is an alumnus of FTII Pune who is respected for his Art-house cult films like 'Kaal Abhirati', 'Bishar Blues' and 'Cosmic Sex' which has been critically acclaimed in India as well as other countries. Amitabha has also conducted classes and workshops in the prime film schools of the country over more than two decades. He has been a revered mentor for several generations of film students.

Kaladham’ is a workplace for a community of National Award winning artists that has been created and developed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. It was developed with the object of practising as well as reaching out and connecting to the community concerning art practice. A number of eminent senior artists of this country have their working studios and homes in Kaladham. It has a sprawling campus with an inspiring atmosphere, steeped in creativity.


What’s in store:

The main objective of this course is to understand the process through which a film-maker creates. It is an opportunity to engage with the creative aspects of cinema and develop a historical perspective about this art form.

Global cinema transgresses the boundaries of nationalities and cultural identities and connects across the world with stories on the human condition. Through glimpses of what is happening across the world of contemporary cinema, this course will provide participants the basis to look beyond the surface and ask valid questions.

Digital cinema has opened up the domain of film-making and made it more inclusive and accessible to a wider number of people to engage creatively with this very powerful medium. The objective of this course is to materialize this fantastic possibility that the digital technology has offered us.

  • Understanding the work of a Director and screenwriter

  • Principles of Editing; Understanding the work of an Editor

  • Recording & Designing sound for a film

  • Expressionism and Realism in Cinema

  • Mis-en-scene and Montage

  • Modern Cinema and its significance

  • Documentary Cinema

  • Cinema, Fine Arts and the New Media

  • Practical experience of doing a creative exercise as a class


What we’ll work with:

A classroom theatre with projection facilities., basic digital camera, tripod and computers. Students who own laptops should bring them along.


Who should sign up:

This course is for anybody above the age of 18 (no upper age limit), anybody who is a film buff or who loves cinema and intends to develop a deeper connect with this art form. From a professional point of view this could be a useful refresher course for teachers, journalists or students who intends to engage with further higher studies on cinema.
